Enjoy your favourite things… don’t save them for ‘a special day’
Advice
Enjoy your favourite things. Don’t wait for that ‘special occasion’ to wear that ‘special’ dress.
Where it’s coming from…
This is something I often struggle with. I’ve noticed that children don’t really have this issue, perhaps because they live more in the moment. You see, unlike me, if my daughter has a favourite top, dress or pair of shoes, she will wear them till they fall apart - and she grows out of them.
Me, on the other hand, I ‘save’ my favourite things for that ‘special occasion’. Then - more often than not - at the end of a season I realise that, once again, an entire summer would have passed and I did not wear the wedges or the dress I love: They remained in the wardrobe, and I did not get to enjoy wearing them. Which defeats the point of even having them.
The thing is that I am very aware of this. In the past we’d joke about those people who had a brand-new-plastic-wrapped living room they never used. I keep telling myself that I will start using the stuff I like.
I am working hard on this one… on taking the advice that my daughter is unknowingly passing on to me by example. Because deep down I know that life is too short not to use our favourite stuff. True, unlike children we are less likely to grow out of stuff. But I have learnt through experience that unused shoes can also disintegrate in their pristine boxes.
So, might as well they get worn out on our feet. That’s a happier life for us, and a happier ending for them.
