‘Perfection’ is in the eye of the beholder

The advice…

You know that ‘perfect’ girl? Chances are she too has insecurities.

Where it’s coming from…

Teenage years can be very stressful for girls. As our bodies change and mature it can feel uncomfortable. Already when I was a teen, girls would compare themselves to the girls on TV or to the popular girls at school.

Today the pressure is even higher with ‘perfection-bombardment’ on social media - reflected in the people around us who try to live up to it.

I remember looking in awe at how confident and ‘perfect’ some girls were while I battled a new complex about myself every month: the eyes, the ears, the hair, the thighs, the toes. But as time passed I started to realise that even those girls were facing insecurities.

A little anacdote. Years back I remember coming across a particular woman through work and I remember admiring her for her all-round confidence. More recently our paths crossed through our children and we were talking about our younger days. She opened up about her past and present insecurities. It was an eye opener.

We are all human. We all have our good days when we feel good about ourselves, and our bad days when we do not like anything about ourselves. What’s important is to keep the bigger picture in mind: you are not alone.
