Dress to express, not to impress

The advice…

Dress to express, not to impress.

Where it’s coming from…

For centuries the fashion world thrived on the power that clothing has when it comes to how we feel. The right outfit can make all the difference. It can make us feel polished, confident, attractive, comfortable… etc.

We all know the feeling of going out in clothes we don’t like. They make us feel run down, and scruffy. They make us hope we don’t run into someone we know.

But, on the flip side of the coin, there is another uncomfortable feeling that can come with wearing the trendiest of clothes. I’m talking about when you don’t feel comfortable in what you’re wearing, no matter how ‘this season’. If you feel the dress is too tight, the trousers are too baggy, the shirt is too bright or too anything… you will hold yourself back.

So let’s dress to express: ourselves. Our tastes, our personalities and, why not, our moods. This is something I have learnt with time and I hope to pass on to my daughter. Although I suspect, she might already know.

The other day my daughter had a pink-themed party and did not want to wear the pretty party dress. She wore jeans and a pink T-shirt and wrapped a scarf around her head. At the party, there were some girls in princess dresses, others in tracksuits and others in jeans. They all looked lovely and had a super time: happy with their choices. Happy in their own clothes. Happy in their own skin.
