Treat yourself as you would treat your best friend

Advice

Treat yourself as you would treat your best friend.

Where it’s coming from…

We can be our own worst critics. We can be too harsh on ourselves, too unforgiving.

The truth is that whenever a close friend is going through a though patch, we often have words of comfort and understanding for that friend. Even if that friend opens up about doing something she is not proud of - or actually ashamed of - we hear words of reassurance and forgiveness uttered from our mouth. We hear kindness.

But when it comes to ourselves, we are often not so understanding - not so kind and forgiving.

We hear ourselves congratulate friends about their achievements. But downplay our own.

And we see our friends acting the same towards us: supporting us, celebrating us… but being harsh on themselves. They don’t see what we see. And we don’t see what they see.

This is why sometimes we should just try and treat ourselves as we would treat our close friends - see how far we’ve come, forgive our own mistakes. Be honest enough with ourselves to - yes, why not - see the bad… but also the good.
